Triple Crown Winners & Close Contenders

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is the most celebrated event in the American horse racing. It consists of 3 Horse Races: Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Preakness Stakes at Pimlico and Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.

A horse must win all of these three horse races in order to be a Triple Crown Winner. Being a Triple Crown Champion is considered to be the greatest achievement of a thoroughbred race horse, the horse racing pinnacle. There have only been 12 Triple Crown winners since 1919.

Triple Crown Winners

The last member of the exclusive Triple Crown Winners Club is American Pharoah, which won the 2015 Triple Crown. Big Brown failed in 2008 when he completely fell apart in the Belmont Stakes and was pulled up around the final turn then eased down the stretch.

Since 1978, 11 subsequent horses won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness but failed in the Belmont. I'll Have Another had his chance in 2012, but sadly he was scratched due to an injury the day before the Belmont Stakes and retired to stud.
